Best known for inspiring the Hudson River School of painting, for 140 years the Catskill Mountain House stood on a rock shelf above the Hudson Valley and facing the River. It embodied the romantic ideal. Its cliffside marked the dividing line between the cultured, civilized Hudson Valley it overlooked so grandly and the howling wilderness at its back. It was America's first mountain resort hotel, and it beckoned to the rich and famous: presidents, poets, generals and tycoons. But it beckoned most to a loosely associated group of young painters who would come to be known as the Hudson River School-Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, Asher B. Durand, Jasper Cropsey, and others-who helped forge the new nation's identity and launched America's first indigenous art movement
