In 1851 the Hudson River Railroad -- later to become the New York Central — began service on the east bank of the Hudson providing the first service between Manhattan and Rensselaer. Residents of Greene County and other places to the West side of the Hudson had to cross the river to avail themselves of the train. It would be another three decades before there would be train service on the west side of the Hudson. Being smart business men, the Beach brothers saw a great opportunity with the coming of the railroad to Columbia County.
In 1853 Charles L. Beach joined his brothers, A. F. and G.L. Beach, in getting control of the ferry service that linked the Hudson River Railroad (at Oak Hill, on the east bank of the Hudson) with his stage line going to the mountains.” Oak Hill would later become known as Greendale. Around this time horse powered ferries were becoming obsolete and the ferry was converted to steam power.
The ferry operated for 50 about years before service was abandoned by the Village of Catskill in 1936.
The opening of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge eight years later in 1935 marked the end for the ferry service.
