In 1923 The Cauterskill Ice Company started to harvest ice 10 ½ inches in thickness on January 14th.
In 1927 Benjamin Wishengrad and Morris Silverman of Hudson took over the retail business of the Cauterskill Ice Company, the concern to be known as the Catskill Ice Company.

Ice picks were common in homes from the 1800s until the mid-20th century, essential for breaking large blocks of harvested ice into smaller, manageable pieces for iceboxes, declining in use as electric refrigerators became widespread, especially after World War II. These pointed tools were used by homeowners and icemen to chip ice for cooling food before modern refrigeration took over.
