Hunter Mountain was originally known as Greenland Mountain until it was changed in the mid-1800s to honor local landlord John Hunter. .
William Edwards was successful harvesting hemlock bark for tanning during the mid-19th century in what is now the ski area.
A ridge was named the Colonel's Chair in his honor.
